Me, My Health, and My Watch: How Children with ADHD Understand Smartwatch Health Data

Abstract: Children with ADHD can experience a wide variety of challenges related to self-regulation, which can lead to poor educational, health, and wellness outcomes. Technological interventions, such as mobile and wearable health systems, can support data collection and reflection about health status. However, little is known about how ADHD children interpret such data. We conducted a deployment study with 10 children, aged 10 to 15, for six weeks, during which they used a smartwatch in their homes. Results from obser… Show more

“…Studies on smartwatch usage among children began with Williams et al 's work [154] in 2003, which involved co-designing soundscape wearable applications with children. Then, numerous scholars have examined children's adoption of smartwatches for fitness monitoring [7], activity tracking [100], and self-regulation [33,126], mostly focusing on health informatics [6,19,67,103,124,142]. Additionally, there is a distinct strand of research centered on the implementation of smartwatches in educational contexts [12,41,115,117], such as scientific learning [30,31,53] and fostering creativity [70,147].…”

“…Designed specifically for educational purposes, these smartwatches feature interactive learning modules, language lessons, math exercises, and educational games (Takiddeen & Zualkernan, 2020). The motion-powered technology not only ensures uninterrupted access to educational content but also encourages physical activity among children, fostering their holistic development (Ankrah et al, 2023). With their durable design and offline capabilities, these smartwatches can withstand the challenging conditions of war-affected regions, providing children with a valuable tool for continued learning and empowerment, regardless of the constraints imposed by the conflict.…”
