MDCT Linear and Volumetric Analysis of Adrenal Glands: Normative Data and Multiparametric Assessment

Abstract: • Volumetric measurements are more reproducible than linear measurements for adrenal glands. • Inter-observer reproducibility of adrenal gland volume is excellent using semiautomatic software. • Gender, age, BMI, and diabetes independently influence total adrenal gland volume. • Adrenal micronodularity is associated with increased total adrenal gland volume.

“…To date, objective characteristics of adrenal hyperplasia are only poorly specified. In the present study, adrenal hyperplasia was defined according to three main criteria: adrenal limb (medial and lateral) >5 mm (28), adrenal volume above reference values in the general population (as referred in Carsin et al (29)) or the presence of adrenal nodule >10 mm. The presence of hypertension was defined as a systolic blood pressure (SBP) >140 mm Hg, diastolic blood pressure (DBP) ≥90 mmHg and/or patients under any current antihypertensive therapy.…”

“…Normal range for total adrenal volume was calculated based on existing studies as mean ± 1.96 SD. 22,23 variables associated with adrenal volume in univariate analysis with a P-value < 0.1 were considered in the model. Statistical calculations were performed with JMP 13.0.0 software (2016, SAS Institute Inc).…”

“…Normal adrenal glands were defined as an adrenal limb junction of 8 mm in the axial plane. Adrenal hyperplasia was defined as volumes greater than published norms: right adrenal gland, 5.7 mL for males and 4.9 mL for females; left adrenal gland, 5.7 mL for males, 4.4 mL for females . Atrophy designation per radiologist was defined as ‘thinner than the adjacent width of the limb of the diaphragm’.…”
