Industrial automation and control systems are going through a big change, adopting the modern computing and Internet technologies to give completely new agility and adaptability properties to production plants, transport and energy systems and infrastructures, often referred to as Industrial Cyber Physical Systems (ICPS). In manufacturing, they are expected to cope with product customizations, changes in the market or supply chain, or failures. However, the wide adoption of ICPS requires rethinking approaches to their design and programming. This article reviews the state of the art of programming approaches for ICPS and analyses their capabilities, in the hope that it will help researchers to identify potential opportunities of future development of software solutions for ICPS.

The growth of innovative services backed up by various sensors and devices provides an unprecedented potential for ubiquitous computing applications and systems. However, in order to benefit from the recent developments, the current service middleware technology needs a catch-up of being able to fully support interactions among the services. OSGi is considered as a viable service framework solution due to its ability to deal with the dynamism inherent with ubiquitous cloud environments. iPOJO has also emerged as a service component model that simplifies the development of OSGi applications. However, the technology runs short of providing adequate support to foster declarative service compositions of realistic interaction topologies. Noticing this deficiency, we propose an iPOJO component-based service workflow architecture, named iPOJO Flow, where component services can easily be composed together to form realistic, complicated applications. Along with the architectural design, the paper also introduces a new DSL to specify service workflow topologies in a declarative way. The effectiveness of our proposed approach is validated through a prototype demonstration, comparative design analysis, and performance experiments.

The growth of connected devices, mostly due to the large number of Internet of Things (IoT) deployments and the emergence of mobile Cloud services, introduces new challenges for the design of service architectures in Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC). An MCC framework should provide elasticity and scalability in a distributed and dynamic way while dealing with limited environment resources and variable mobile contexts (Web applications, realtime, enterprise services, mobile to mobile, hostile environment, etc.) that may include additional constraints impacting the design foundation of Cloud services. We show in this work how Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) can be a key solution to provide distributed mobile Cloud services and how OSGi platform can be an adaptive and efficient framework to provide such implementation. We adapt the proposed MCC framework to different architecture contexts. The first one is a traditional centric model, where mobile devices are reduced to consuming services. The second one is a distributed model where the power of mobile-tomobile interaction offers unlimited value-services opportunities, and finally three-tier architecture is considered with the introduction of the Cloudlet notion. For each context, we explore the performance of our service oriented framework, and contrast it with alternative existing solutions.
