Mc-22 Development of a Head Actuator Based on the New Design Concept for the Wide Servo Bandwidth in a Hard Disk Drives

Abstract: With the ,aim of increasing, the track density in a hard disk drive by widening servo bandwidth, the authors have devgleped a new design concept base'd on lowering the major resonance gain in the transfer fundtion of the actuato: A head actuator based on this design concept was constructed and fitted in an actual disk-drive assembly and evaluated. The test results show that the measured servo bandwidth is .wider by rnore 300Hz than that of a typical.ly designed actuaton

“…As a result, the residue of the primary resonance becomes significant. In order to decrease the residue of the primary resonance, we developed a mechanical structure using a four-bar linkage mechanism (Arisaka et al, 2003). The proposed design concept is based on the fact that a small head displacement reduces the residue of modes.…”

“…To amplify displacement, the PZT actuator coupled with the VCM mechanism has attracted researchers over years. In order to decrease the residue of the primary resonance caused by the head positioning system, ARISAKA et al [12] developed a mechanical structure using a four-bar linkage mechanism. Liu and Wang [13] presented the control performance of a combined piezo-VCM actuator where onedegree-of-freedom experimental setup was configured, and the control performance was effectively demonstrated by using a switching controller.…”

“…Jang and Park presented a numerical method to analyze the electromechanical variables of a spinning disk-spindle system, and they showed a possibility to detect the free-falling HDD by monitoring the electromechanical signals of a spindle motor (Jang and Park 2005). Also, many researchers have presented the dynamic characteristics and proposed designs for an actuator assembly, or actuator servo control algorithms to compensate for the vibration and various disturbances during the head positioning process of a HDD (Wang et al 2000;Onuki and Ishioka 2001;Arisaka et al 2003;Xu and Guo 2003). However, most of the work has investigated the disk-spindle system or actuator separately in electromagnetic or mechanical fields or both fields, and they did not investigate the electromechanical variables of an actuator due to the change in the electromechanical variables of the rotating disk-spindle of an operating HDD.…”
