Maximum Power Point Tracking Techniques for Photovoltaic Panel: A Review and Experimental Applications

Abstract: This article contains a review of essential control techniques for maximum power point tracking (MPPT) to be applied in photovoltaic (PV) panel systems. These devices are distinguished by their capability to transform solar energy into electricity without emissions. Nevertheless, the efficiency can be enhanced provided that a suitable MPPT algorithm is well designed to obtain the maximum performance. From the analyzed MPPT algorithms, four different types were chosen for an experimental evaluation over a comme… Show more

“…In the last decade, the interests of scientific, industrial, and political communities focused on environmental issues, in particular on future catastrophic climate scenarios currently foreseen with temperature increases of up to 2 • C [1,2]. Therefore, several efforts of these communities to find new solutions to improve greenhouse gas reduction and decarbonize of energy sources have been detected.…”

“…Efficiency is a crucial aspect of solar systems. Modern electronic converters can convert electricity with an acceptable efficiency; however, the efficiency of solar panels currently available on the market is not higher than approximately 20% [3]. Their efficiency, however, is increasing steadily as they are constantly being developed.…”

“…Improving the efficiency of solar panels and inverters is challenging, and the output depends on available technologies. Moreover, the system's design may require better performance components, dramatically increasing installation costs [4]. Instead, improving the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) with a new control algorithm is more straightforward, avoiding high costs.…”

“…Instead, improving the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) with a new control algorithm is more straightforward, avoiding high costs. This can be performed even in installations already in use by updating existing control algorithms, which leads to an immediate increase in electricity generation and, consequently, the costs are minimized [4]. MPPT algorithms are necessary because PV arrays have a nonlinear voltage-current characteristic with a unique point where the generated power is maximum.…”
