Maximum Oxygen Uptake of Male Soccer Players According to their Competitive Level, Playing Position and Age Group: Implication from a Network Meta-Analysis

Abstract: The aim of the present meta-analysis was to compare the maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max) characteristics of male soccer players relative to their competitive level, playing position and age group and the interaction between them. The meta-analysis was based on 16 studies, employing 2385 soccer players aged 10–39 years. Higher-level soccer players showed greater (ES = 0.58 [95% CI 0.08-1.08], SE = 0.25, var = 0.06, z = 2.29, p = 0.022) VO2max performance with respect to their lower level counterparts. Furthermore… Show more

“…Aerobic performance (VO 2max /VO 2peak ) were assessed using a 20 m multistage shuttle running field-test [ 8 ]. This method most closely reflects the football effort due to the environment in which physical effort is implemented [ 9 , 10 , 11 ].…”

“…During professional competitions, athletes dispute between two and five games per month, with each game lasting for ∼90 min, a time span, that, in case of a tie, can be extended (Castagna et al, 2010;Costa et al, 2019). Moreover, athletes have training sessions twice a day during the competitive season and take part in national and international championships (Slimani et al, 2018b). This hard and demanding training schedule and tournaments involve great developed physical, mental, and physiological factors (Slimani et al, 2018a;Degens et al, 2019).…”

“…Skinfold and body fat measurements are major contributing factors for determining a player’s body composition. Although a certain amount of body fat is important for the maintenance of body metabolism, it is believed that excess adiposity negatively influences football performance [ 32 , 33 ]. The sum of the skinfolds can be used to determine adiposity and to provide detail regarding local fat depots and fat distribution in the body [ 34 ].…”
