Maximizing the Potential of Digital Games for Understanding Skill Acquisition

Abstract: Gaming is a domain of profound skill development. Players’ digital traces create data that track the development of skill from novice to expert levels. We argue that existing work, although promising, has yet to take advantage of the potential of game data for understanding skill acquisition, and that to realize this potential, future studies can use the fit of formal learning curves to individual data as a theoretical anchor. Learning-curve analysis allows learning rate, initial performance, and asymptotic pe… Show more

“…Complex skills are considerably more challenging to study, both technically and conceptually. Across many domains, greater and greater volumes of data are becoming available, raising the possibility of strongly data-driven methods for studying real motor skills that are acquired and improved over longer time-periods [55][56][57][58][59][60]. However, it is not clear whether such big-data approaches will be able to provide more fundamental insights into why and how improvements in performance take place.…”

“…Our results confirm that such a unified framework is not yet available. However, recent advances in our ability to collect data on complex tasks through telemetry [31,[43][44][45] provides cognitive science with the opportunity to identify new phenomena to be explained. We hope this incentivizes comprehensive theoretical approaches with the capacity to make clear and nuanced predictions about the presence and magnitude of transfer costs.…”

“…These games commonly comprise multimodal features (e.g., sounds, animations, text) that stimulate young children's attention and enhance motivation (van de Ven et al, 2017). This might be especially necessary for children who are struggling to master basic academic skills, such as reading, and need to remain motivated to practice the compromised skill for a prolonged period (Froyen et al, 2009; Stafford & Vaci, 2022). In this context, games are the ideal combination of massive, targeted exposure while maintaining the child's motivation and engagement (Prensky, 2003).…”
