Maximizing Spectral Efficiency for Energy Harvesting-Aware WBAN

Abstract: In this paper, we investigate the spectral efficiency of a communication link in a wireless body area network (WBAN) capable of harvesting energy from the environment. We consider two scenarios for the transmission which are single- and dual-hop and achieve the power management policy for each scenario. In the first scenario, the aim is to maximize the link's spectral efficiency over N time slots subject to the battery capacity, energy harvesting constraint, and WBAN limitations including power and outage prob… Show more

“…It is also found from Fig. 2 that the exact COP expression in (10) matches the asymptotic result with θ → ∞ in (17) very well in the low and medium regime of γ S , and then deviates it with approaching the other asymptotic expression with γ S → ∞, namely (22), when the transmit SNR is high enough. Generally speaking, a larger amount of SIC is needed to reach the performance floor when a larger transmit SNR is provided.…”

“…Practically, the lifetime of wireless devices may be greatly limited by the capacity of their batteries [14]. Except for increasing the battery capacity, there is a strong desire to exploit effective remote charging technologies in some energyconstrained networks like WSNs [15,16], wireless body area networks (WBANs) [17,18], etc. Hence, the simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) has recently gained much attention, because it is regarded as a promising technique to transmit both energy and information by the same electromagnetic wave [19].…”

“…When ρ is very small, the time allocation for information transmission is less and the time allocation for EH is more, following Equations 19 and 20. Because of this insufficient slot duration, the average achievable rate is poor (19) and thus, it is more likely to fail to meet the target rate of transmission. This results in high outage of links from User k to EHR (k ∈ 1, 2), as shown in the Figure. With the increase in ρ value, the system outage probability decreases due to SNR improvement of the links from User k to EHR, following Equations 19, 27 and 30 and reaches the minimum value at the optimal value of ρ opt = 0.32.…”

“…Huang et al proposed both online and offline power allocation schemes for 2 different types of EH constraints: causal energy state information and noncausal energy state information. Furthermore, optimal power allocation problem in EH‐enabled wireless body area networks is addressed in the work of Mosavat‐Jahromi . Recently, Abuzainab et al study the problem of vulnerability of RF‐EH–enabled communication to a man‐in‐the‐middle attack by a malicious user.…”
