“…The first nurse midwifery education program began in New York City in 1931, and by 1955 the American College of Nurse-Midwifery was founded, which in 1969 merged with the American Association of Nurse-Midwives (AANM) becoming the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM; Androus, 2022). However, with advances in modern medicine, by the 1950s most births occurred in the hospital with a physician in attendance even as nurse midwife programs grew (Androus, 2022).
