Mature Fields Hold Big Expansion Opportunity

Abstract: Mature fields While big discoveries and major new developments deservedly grab the headlines, mature fields are the backbone of global oil and gas production. Revitalizing these fields extends their productive lives and offers significant opportunity to expand worldwide reserves. A 2011 report, “Mature Oil Fields—Unleashing the Potential,” by IHS Cambridge Energy Research Associates, indicated that approximately two-thirds of global daily average oil production comes from mature f… Show more

“…The redevelopment cost of mature elements of a portfolio is comparable to or even significantly lower than new exploration costs. Moreover, redevelopment has lower risk than new exploration (Parshall, 2012;McComb & Towler, 2013). Similar redevelopment efforts took place worldwide (O'Brian et al, 2016).…”

“…However, much of the available data needed to be upgraded or, in some cases, totally reinterpreted. The key to success was to have a multidisciplinary team working with a consistent, quality checked dataset so that no critical aspect was overlooked during reevaluation (Parshall, 2012).…”

“…Given the many problems associated with producing oil, there is a need to increase oil recovery when a considerable amount of oil is left unproduced in mature reservoirs. [ 1,2 ] One way to improve oil recovery is to use water as a displacing fluid, a method known as water flooding. However, using water as the displacing fluid has some serious drawbacks, including early water breakthrough, viscous fingering, low sweep efficiency, and unwanted water production.…”

“…According to a report by IHS Cambridge Energy Research Associates [1], almost 60 % of the world's daily hydrocarbon production comes from mining fields that are in a downstream stage, or have reached the final stage of development. At this stage of development, gas and gas condensate fields are developed mainly in gas mode for depletion with a constant decrease in operating pressure at the wellhead.…”
