Trends in the percentage cover of macroalgae are generally used as an important indicator of the health of coral reefs. While considerable data exist on patterns of macroalgal cover, the underlying patch dynamics of macroalgae are poorly understood. It is important to appreciate the dynamical processes of algae because they determine the frequency and duration of competitive interaction with other taxa, such as corals, and thereby contribute to our understanding of competitive interactions. We used transition matrices to quantify and describe the patch dynamics of 2 common macroalgae in the Caribbean, Dictyota pulchella and Lobophora variegata, over a 9 mo period. Size-based matrices were constructed for both species from forereef habitats subjected to contrasting levels of wave exposure. The dynamics of D. pulchella are highly sensitive to the physical environment, whilst those of L. variegata are far less sensitive. The patch dynamics of D. pulchella showed a higher temporal variation than L. variegata, but only on the exposed forereef. D. pulchella virtually disappeared in January at both the exposed and sheltered sites, whereas L. variegata exhibited a continuing increase in patch size irrespective of exposure. D. pulchella formed larger, more dynamic patches under high exposure. This implies that contact interactions with coral colonies and space preemption for settling planulae will occur more frequently than in sheltered environments. Our results demonstrate the need to investigate patch dynamics of macroalgae at the individual species level, whilst taking into account environmental conditions.

Many algal species have life cycles that involve an obligate alternation of generations between nearly identical, free-living haploid and diploid individuals. The percentages of haploids to diploids, and the spatial and temporal scales of variation of these percentages, must be examined before hypotheses about the relative importance of haploid and diploid demographic processes on population dynamics can be evaluated. In this paper, we investigated the spatial and temporal dynamics of the percentage of haploid and diploid stages in 4 congeners of the marine alga Mazzaella (M. capensis, M. flaccida, M. laminarioides, and M. splendens) across large portions of their geographical ranges. For the 3 species that were sampled over multiple years (M. flaccida, M. laminarioides, M. splendens), the percentage of haploids varied significantly among sites. However, 2 of them (M. flaccida, M. splendens) did not exhibit significant temporal (interannual) variation in the percentage of haploids. In addition, more fine-scale temporal studies on M. flaccida populations revealed that there were also no significant intra-annual fluctuations in the percentage of haploids, although there was significant population turnover on this timescale. This spatial variability but temporal stability of haploid -diploid ratios (for M. flaccida and M. splendens) can be used to generate, and subsequently test, hypotheses on the regulation of haploid -diploid ratios and the relative importance of haploid and diploid demographic processes on population dynamics.

Gelidium sesquipedale fecundity was quantified by counting tetrasporangial sori and cystocarps per meter squared and by estimating the number of spores contained inside them . These were obtained by regression on a size metric of reproductive structures . Tetrasporangial sori length and cystocarp thickness were the best estimators of spore number. To assess spore recruitment, 12 pottery tiles were fixed to the bottom, and the appearance of small fronds was monitored.No clear seasonal pattern of reproduction was found . Tetraspore production peaked in March 1990 with 10.4 x 10 6 spores m -2 , whereas the carpospore peak was lower, 4 .9 x 10 5 spores m -2 in July 1989 . Recruitment followed tetraspore peaks . The probability of a G. sesquipedale tetraspore making the transition to a recruit was 4 .7 x 10 -5 . Frond length was significantly related to tetrasporangial sori number, while cystocarp number was only related to frond branching order. Minimum size for reproduction was 6 .9 cm for gametophytes and 5 .4 cm for tetrasporophytes; very rarely were cystocarpic fronds smaller than 9 cm, while tetrasporic fronds were often longer than 15 cm . Cystocarpic fronds were significantly shorter and had more branches than tetrasporic fronds .
