Matrix models for algal life history stages

Abstract: Matnx models based on size and stage, corresponding to the monophasic, biphasic and triphasic life histones of algae have been constructed. Similarities and differences of these models with the Leslie matnx model, as well as with other extensions and modif~cations of it, are discussed. Two examples are given to show the utility of these models: one based on field data for Sargassum siliquosurn J. Ag. and a second, based on data for Laminaria longicruris Pyle., taken from the literature. Stable size distributio… Show more

“…For many marine algae age is not a practical categorical variable, since it is impossible to reliably age macroalgae with the exception of large kelps (Ang & De Wreede 1990). Furthermore, for many organisms individual age is not correlated with demographic parameters and therefore size or life stage is a better categorical variable (Sauer & Slade 1987).…”

“…The distribution of haploid and diploid individuals in local populations of species where the 2 phases are isomorphic has received increasing attention in the literature (Destombe et al 1989, Ang & De Wreede 1990, De Wreede & Green 1990, Scrosati & De Wreede 1999. Because these populations are dependent upon the persistence of both phases, populations that undergo wide oscillations between low and high haploid percentages, or populations with a very high percentage (e.g.…”
