Matrix metalloproteinase-9 genetic variations affect MMP-9 levels in obese children

Abstract: Objective: Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) is involved in the atherosclerotic process and functional polymorphisms in the MMP-9 gene affect MMP-9 expression/activity, and are associated with cardiovascular diseases. However, no study has tested the hypothesis that functional MMP-9 polymorphisms could affect MMP-9 levels in obese children. We investigated whether three MMP-9 gene polymorphisms (C-1562T (rs3918242), 90(CA) (14À24) (rs2234681) and Q279R (rs17576)), or haplotypes, affect MMP-9 levels in obese c… Show more

“…[10][11][12] Furthermore, MMP9 is highly expressed in the weak regions of atherosclerotic plaques and may be causally involved in plaque rupture. [13][14][15] The increase in plasma concentrations of MMP9 may be a predictor of cardiovascular disease risk and plasma MMP9…”

“…Mounting evidence suggests that MMP-9 gene polymorphisms may affect MMP-9 levels, the progression of disease conditions and therapeutic responses (Demacq et al, 2009;Jacob-Ferreira et al, 2010b;Lacchini et al, 2010;Belo et al, 2012;Palei et al, in press). Relevant functional MMP-9 polymorphisms include the C(−1562)T polymorphism (Zhang et al, 1999), a microsatellite −90(CA) n (13-25 repeats) in promoter region (Shimajiri et al, 1999), and the Q279R in exon 6 (Allan et al, 1995).…”
