Matrix effects on mass spectrometric determinations of four pharmaceuticals and personal care products in water, sediments, and biota

Abstract: Simple analytical methods were developed for the extraction and determination of four pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) from water, sediments, and biota. PPCPs were determined using tandem LC-MS in electrospray ionization mode, and interactions with matrix co-eluents were investigated. Extractions of water samples were performed using solid-phase extraction (SPE), sediments were extracted by pressurized liquid extraction (PLE), and biota was extracted by liquid extraction. The selected analyti… Show more

“…19 For example, the use of ASE for extraction of pharmaceuticals from sediment results in recoveries greater than 116%. [23][24][25] Although these methods are comprehensive, use minimal amounts of solvent and reduce the processing time, 26 they are considered less popular because the instruments themselves may be complicated to use and expensive. 14,27 Therefore, ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) is a frequently applied alternative technique for the extraction of pharmaceuticals from sediment.…”

“…It is generally accepted that liquid or gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry offers the sensitivity and selectivity required. It has been successfully applied to the analysis of other smaller invertebrate species such as Chironomus tentans and Hyallela azteca (Dussault et al, 2009;Klosterhaus et al, 2013). However, robust analytical methods to determine PPCP residue occurrence in G. pulex are still lacking.…”

“…The ion suppression/enhancement effects play an important role in LC-MS quantification, and the extent of these effects needs to be quantitatively assessed [34, 35]. The ion suppression and matrix effects can cause severe problems with the quantification in trace analyses.…”
