This review attempts to present a broad view of the technique laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), since its origin, fundamentals, sample preparation strategies, use of chemometric tools for data processing, the advantages and limitations with regard to qualitative and quantitative analysis, aplications and future trends as an analytical technique that is in consolidation in analytical chemistry. LIBS is a rapid and versatile, which is able of providing qualitative and quantitative analytical information for practically any sample, in a virtually non-destructive way, without any substantial sample preparation. The instrumentation is simple, robust, compact, and enables remote analysis. The advancement of the LIBS applications in the areas of agriculture, environmental, food, biological/pharmaceutical, forensic, metallurgy and electronic waste were discussed in detail in this review. We consider that this review will be an important tool concerning dissemination of the LIBS, mainly for audience of undergraduate courses, and disciplines related to instrumental analysis.

Investigations of Laser Produced Plasmas Generated by Laser Ablation on Geomaterials. Experimental and Theoretical Aspects

Several surface investigation techniques, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), EDX, and optical microscopy, were employed in order to describe the mineral contents in several geomaterials. Space and time resolved optical emission spectroscopy was implemented to analyze the plasma generated by the laser–geomaterial interaction. The values of the plasma parameters (velocity and temperature) were discussed with respect to the nature of the minerals composing the geomaterials and the morphological structure of the samples. Correlations were found between the excitation temperatures of the atomic and ionic species of the plasmas and the presence of calcite in the samples. A mathematical model was built to describe the dynamics in ablation plasma using various mathematical operational procedures: multi structuring of the ablation plasma by means of the fractal analysis and synchronizations of the ablation plasma entities through SL (2R) type group invariance and in a particular case, through self-modulation in the form of Stoler type transformations. Since Stoler type transformations are implied in general, in the charge creation and annihilation processes, then the SL (2R) type group invariance become fundamental in the description of ablation plasma dynamics.

The Mn/Fe ratio in ferromanganese nodules is determined by calibration-free laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy based on the use of only the plasma temperature and electron density and the intensities of manganese and iron analytical lines (Mn I at 447.28 and 447.93 nm and Fe I at 447.65 nm). The plasma temperature was determined by the two-line method (Mn I at 447.28 and 447.93 nm), while the plasma electron density was determined by the Stark broadening of the Mg I line at 517.26 nm. The study was performed using both standard samples (OOPE series) and samples of ferromanganese nodules sampled during expeditions to the Kara and Laptev Seas. The possibility of semiquantitative determination of the Mn/Fe ratio within the range from 0.2 to 4.2, which is enough for determining this ratio in most types of nodules of different geographical origins, is demonstrated. The calibration-free analysis data correlate with the results of inductively coupled plasma atomic emission analysis.
