Matrine inhibits the invasive properties of human osteosarcoma cells by downregulating the ERK-NF-κB pathway

Abstract: Matrine has been used in anti-inflammatory and anticancer therapies for a long time. However, the antimetastatic effect and molecular mechanism(s) of matrine on osteosarcoma are still unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the effects of matrine and related mechanism(s) on osteosarcoma cells. In the study, we found that matrine inhibited the proliferation of osteosarcoma cells in vivo and in vitro and inhibited tumor cell metastasis in vitro at cytotoxic doses. Matrine also decreased the expre… Show more

“…Matrine exerts excellent pharmacological activity and is beneficial for lowering body temperature, promoting diuresis, detoxifying, treating jaundice and preventing liver fibrosis. Previous studies indicated that matrine may be used as an effective treatment for various types of cancer, including liver (21) and lung cancer (22), gastric (23) and colon cancer (24), cervical cancer (25), leukemia (26), osteosarcoma (27), glioma (28) and nasopharyngeal carcinoma (29), and exhibits potent activity against various other types of cancer. Lung cancer occurs in the bronchial epithelium (30) and is characterized by a high morbidity rate (31), a considerable degree of malignancy, a great metastatic propensity in the early stages and the tendency to recur following tumor excision (32).…”

“…Among MMPs, MMP-2 and MMP-9 were reported to play the most important roles for cancer invasion and metastasis (34,35). Previous studies have reported that matrine can reduce the expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in tumor cells (32,36,37). NF-κB, promoting expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9, has previously been reported as a downstream target of matrine in cancer cells (32,36,37).…”
