Mathematics teachers’ practices and thinking in lesson plan development: a case of teaching fraction division

Abstract: In this study, we aimed to examine mathematics teachers' daily lesson plans and associated practices and thinking in lesson plan development. By focusing on teachers' preparation for teaching fraction division, we collected and analyzed a sequence of four lesson plans from each of six mathematics teachers in six different elementary schools in China. Interviews with these teachers were also analyzed to support the lesson plan analysis and reveal teachers' thinking behind their practices. The results show that … Show more

“…Countries like South Africa, Korea and China also have a predominantly textbook-centric culture of teaching as reflected in research originating from these countries (Adler, Reed, Lelliott, & Setati, 2002;Li, Chen & Kulm, 2009;Kim, 1993). In the textbook-centric Asian cultures, textbooks provide a "blueprint for content coverage and instructional sequence" (Li, Chen & An, 2009, p. 813) and so the type of examples, representations and exercise problems given in the textbook may be directly used in classrooms.…”

“…Textbooks have not only served as a basis for developing classroom instruction in China (Li, Chen, & Kulm, 2009), but also Chinese mathematics teachers consider the intensive study of textbooks as the most important way for improving their understanding of mathematics content and mathematical pedagogy content (e.g., Ma, 1999). Consistently, studying and understanding mathematics content structured in textbooks as emphasized by Mr. Zheng presents an important way for expertise improvement through his work station.…”

“…The lesson plans were developed to follow the textbook closely. The pre-learning lesson plan contained all the basic elements that a typical lesson plan in China tends to have (Li, Chen, & Kulm, 2009): a length of two-and-half pages, and containing specific mathematics problems selected and arranged for each step.…”
