Mathematical Thermal Modelling of a Direct-Expansion Solar-Assisted Heat Pump Using Multi-Objective Optimization Based on the Energy Demand

Abstract: An analytical model is proposed to evaluate the performance of a Direct Expansion Solar-Assisted Heat Pump under a given environmental condition. These thermal machines commonly employ uncovered flat plate solar collectors, and given this, the convection phenomenon is taken into account as well as the effect of the diffuse and reflected solar radiation in addition to the normal beam radiation absorbed by the tilted surface of the collectors. The heat pump cycle is modelled through a first law of thermodynamics… Show more

“…The overall analysis of the energy exchange rate of the system is presented, considering various scenarios regarding configuration, i.e., number of solar collectors, working fluid, and both geographic as well as temporal references. The feasibility of installation, performance evaluation and subsequent optimization are then carried out in terms of a new relative efficiency previously introduced, known as Thermal Capacity, τ C , [40,41] which was developed to assess both the efficiency and overall effectiveness of the system based on a supply-and-demand criterion. This performance metric complements the already existing ones, particularly COP, and helps determine if not only the HP system fulfils the thermal demand, but also the degree at which said demand is met.…”

“…The research reported in this paper employs a model developed for this particular application, as well as an alternative evaluation criteria based on a new relative efficiency, both previously published by De León and Carvajal [40,41], where fully detailed explanations are provided.…”

“…It was found that the heating capacity and heating performance of the heat pump can be increased and the discharging temperature of the compressor can be reduced by the vapor injection. León-Ruiz et al [16] proposed an analytical model to investigate the performance of a Direct Expansion Solar-Assisted Heat Pump and compared three experimental results in literature. By the analytical analysis, an optimization operational strategy was established to improve the performance of the system.…”
