“…These results are similar to ours in that only animals with high total anti-PTx titers exhibited enhanced survival, suppressed leukocytosis, and normal clinical signs. A ~3-fold increase in maximum leukocytosis was observed (38), which is similar to the transient ~2-fold increase observed here (Fig. 4 and fig.…”

“…Non-human primates are the best and most accurate animal model of human infection [85][86][87][88][89][90][91][92][93] and are often used in preclinical trials [122]. Similar to companion animals, non-human primates are also USDA protected, although the approvals and protocol requirements differ.…”

“…Vaccination studies are commonly done in mice [40,42,49], rabbits [65,66], cattle [81], and primates [86,91,93]. These studies can demonstrate the power of inhibiting the T3SS by using antibodies that recognize T3SS effectors or structural components.…”

“…As in humans, the disease demonstrates agerelated differences in severity. Five-to 6-week-old (infant) baboons experience very severe disease upon infection, often requiring euthanasia (12,13). In contrast, 6-to 9-month-old (juvenile) baboons experience severe disease that lasts approximately 2 weeks, followed by a 2-to 3-week convalescence, resulting in a return to full health (10).…”
