Maternal serum calprotectin level in intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy

Abstract: Aim: This study aimed to investigate maternal serum levels of calprotectin in patients with intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) and to compare these with serum calprotectin levels in healthy pregnant women. Methods: Ninety pregnant women (ICP group, n = 45; healthy control group, n = 45) were included in the study. The gestational age and body mass index of the participants in the two groups were similar. This prospective cross-sectional study was conducted between November 2019 and May 2020 in the per… Show more

“…30,31 In another recent study supporting the inflammatory process in the pathogenesis of ICP, maternal serum calprotectin levels, a marker of inflammatory disorders, were found to be higher in patients with ICP than in healthy pregnant women. 32 DNI is a new inflammatory marker which is calculated by using the following formula: DNI (%) = (the leukocyte subfraction assayed in the MPO channel by cytochemical reaction) À (the leukocyte subfraction assayed using the nuclear lobularity channel by reflected light beam measurements) with a flow cytometry-based hematologic analyzer. 33,34 In recent years, many studies have been conducted on DNI as an inflammatory biomarker.…”

“…Elevated levels of LFTs, namely transaminases, are a very common (17–80%) [ 1 , 44 , 56 ] finding in patients with ICP, with mean values of 148 IU/L for ALT and 105 IU/L for AST in >2000 patients with ICP [ 53 ] (range of 1.5–8-fold increase × ULN) [ 44 ]. However, elevated LFTs are not considered a diagnostic criterion anymore [ 51 ], especially because they do not correlate with ICP severity and bear limited prognostic significance, if any at all.…”
