Maternal Risk Factors for Term Neonatal Seizures: Population-Based Study in Colorado, 1989—2003

Abstract: Neonatal seizures in term infants are rare but have important potential implications for brain development. Risk factors for neonatal seizures in term infants have been less well defined than those among preterm infants. To evaluate the relationship between maternal risk factors and neonatal seizures in the first 72 hours of life in term infants, a case-control study using the Colorado Birth Certificate Registry was conducted. Term neonates in all hospitals in Colorado with and without seizures in the first 72… Show more

“…Our cohort is similar to other reports in the following: increased risk of neonatal seizures among males (13, 14); increased risk of mortality in preterm infants (9, 15); increased risk of seizures among infants born post-term(16); and increased risk of seizures among neonates with perinatal asphyxia (1-3, 16-18). …”

“…A previous study suggested an association between pre-existing diabetes mellitus and neonatal seizures (11), but not with gestational diabetes. Others have suggested infant macrosomia and advanced maternal age as reasons for increased adverse outcome in infants of diabetic mothers (18).…”

“…The reported effect of maternal age on the risk of newborn seizures has been inconsistent (10, 11, 15). The increased risk of seizures during birth hospitalization among women ≥ 40 in our cohort was small but significant when compared with women aged 25-29.…”

“…Neonatal seizures are a common neurologic diagnosis in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), occurring in 1.8-3.5/1000 live births or 14,000 newborns annually in the US (Hall et al, 2006; Glass et al, 2009a). They contribute to injury after hypoxia-ischemia (Legido, et al, 1991; Wirrell et al, 2001; Miller et al, 2002; Glass et al, 2009b) and are frequently associated with long-term deleterious consequences including intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and other neurodevelopmental disabilities (Clancy et al, 1991; McBride et al, 2000; Toet et al, 2005; Pisani et al, 2007; Nagarajan et al, 2010; Glass et al, 2011).…”
