AimsTo investigate the biochemical correlation of hemoglobin (Hb), dyslipidemia, and HbA1c with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).BackgroundGDM is a condition that develops during pregnancy and is characterized by high blood sugar levels. Biochemical parameters such as hemoglobin (Hb), dyslipidemia, and HbA1c have been implicated in the development of GDM. Understanding the correlation between these biochemical parameters and GDM can provide insights into the underlying mechanisms and potential diagnostic markers for the condition.ObjectiveThe objective of this study was to evaluate the correlation of various biochemical parameters, including Hb, dyslipidemia, and HbA1c, in pregnant women with and without GDM.MethodA cross-sectional study design was used. Pregnant females attending a tertiary care hospital in Faisalabad between September 1st, 2021, and June 25th, 2022, were included in the study. The participants were divided into two groups: those with GDM (GDM group) and those without GDM (non-GDM group). Blood glucose, Hb, and lipid levels were compared between the two groups using statistical tests, including chi-square, independent sample t-test, and Pearson’s correlation.ResultOut of the 500 participants, 261 were in the 2nd trimester and 239 in the 3rd trimester. Maternal age showed a significant difference between the GDM and non-GDM groups. The levels of Hb, TC, HDL, LDL, and HbA1c significantly differed (p < 0.05) between the two groups. TC (r = 0.397), TG (r = 0.290), and LDL (r = 0.509) showed a statistically significant and moderately positive correlation with GDM. HDL (r = −0.394) and Hb (r = −0.294) showed a moderate negative correlation with GDM.ConclusionIncreased levels of HbA1c, TC, and LDL, along with decreased levels of HDL and Hb, were identified as contributing factors to GDM. The levels of TC, TG, and LDL were positively correlated with GDM, while HDL and Hb were negatively correlated. The findings of this study suggest that monitoring and managing hemoglobin, dyslipidemia, and HbA1c levels during pregnancy may be important in identifying and potentially preventing or managing GDM. Further research is needed to explore the underlying mechanisms and potential interventions targeting these biochemical parameters in relation to GDM.

Introduction: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a state of glucose intolerance that was first detected during pregnancy. GDM is increasing worldwide, it is estimated that 15% to 22% of all pregnancies are affected by GDM. GDM can be associated with many consequences, such as fetal macrosomia, preeclampsia, and high caesarean rates. The purpose of this study was to determine the description of glucose and total cholesterol levels in pregnant women in Bangli Regency, Bali. Methods: This research method is descriptive by checking glucose and total cholesterol levels using the enzymatic-colorimetric method. The subjects in this study were 33 pregnant women, with sampling method using the probability sampling method, with a simple random sampling technique. Results: The result of this study is, glucose levels in all samples were in the normal category, while for total cholesterol levels 48,48% were in the normal category and 42,42% were in the abnormal category. Conclusion: Normal glucose levels can be caused by several factors such as the age of the respondent under 40 years, gestational age at term, and the hormones that regulate blood glucose in the body functioning properly. An increase in cholesterol levels can be caused by an increase in sexsteroid hormones, as well as changes in liver and adipose tissue metabolism. An increase in total cholesterol levels in pregnant women needs to be watched out for because it can be on of the markers of the incidence of GDM. ABSTRAK Pendahuluan: Diabetes melitus gestasional (DMG) merupakan keadaan intoleransi glukosa yang pertama kali terdeteksi selama kehamilan. DMG meningkat di seluruh dunia, diperkirakan 15% sampai 22% dari semua kehamilan dipengaruhi oleh DMG. DMG dapat dikaitkan dengan banyak konsekuensi, seperti makrosomia janin, preeklampsia, dan tingkat operasi caesar yang tinggi. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui gambaran kadar glukosa sewaktu dan kolesterol total pada ibu hamil di Kabupaten Bangli, Bali. Metode: Metode penelitian ini adalah deskriptif dengan memeriksa kadar glukosa sewaktu dan kolesterol total menggunakan metode enzimatik kolorimetri. Subyek pada penelitain 33 ibu hamil, dengan cara penarikan sampel dengan mengunakan metode probality sampling, dengan teknik simple random sampling. Hasil: Hasil dari penelitian ini, diperoleh kadar glukosa sewaktu seluruh sampel berada pada kategori normal sedangkan untuk kadar kolesterol total sebanyak 48,48% berada pada kategori normal dan 42,42% pada kategori abnormal. Kesimpulan: Kadar glukosa yang normal dapat disebabkan oleh usia repsonden di bawah 40 tahun, usia kehamilan yang cukup bulan, dan hormon pengatur glukosa yang berfungsi dengan baik. Peningkatan kadar kolesterol total dapat disebabkan oleh peningkatan hormon steroid seks, perubahan metabolisme hati dan jaringan adipose. Peningkatan kadar kolesterol total pada ibu hamil perlu diwaspadai karena dapat menjadi salah satu penanda kejadian DMG.

Background: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is any degree of glucose intolerance with onset or first diagnosis in pregnancy. GDM has numerous potential complications and it is important to estimate its burden and risk factors. The objective of the meta-analysis was to determine the pooled prevalence of GDM in Nigeria and identify its determinants. Methods: The study design was a meta-analysis; therefore the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed. Electronic databases (African Journal Online, PubMed, SCOPUS, and Google Scholar) and the gray literature were systematically searched. Statistical analysis was done with MetaXL using the random effect model. Heterogeneity was determined using the I 2 statistic and the publication bias was checked with the Doi plot. Results: The total sample size was 46 210. The prevalence of GDM in Nigeria was 0.5 – 38% and the pooled prevalence was 11.0% (95% CI 8-13). The I 2 statistic was 99%. The Doi plot suggested some degree of bias. The most frequently reported determinants of GDM were previous macrosomic babies, maternal obesity, family history of diabetes, previous miscarriage, and advanced maternal age. Conclusion: The prevalence of GDM in Nigeria is high and efforts should be geared at modifying its risk factors so as to reduce its prevalence and prevent the associated complications.
