The children's right to quality food is a key to the other children's rights especially the right to survival, development and protection and is a means to analyze by practical items the child's right to non-discrimination. Through the article 20 §2, a) African countries among which Burundi are obliged to assist parents in the implementation of certain children's rights in which the right to nutrition. While article 30 of the same regional instruments obliges countries to behave in childish favorite way when the mother is jailed, other instruments go far. Mandela's rules and Bangkok rules admit that a child may stay with her mother but this is done in accordance with the child best interest. The aim of this article is to analyze the way Burundi implements the children's right to her/his best interest in the context of being with their mothers during the time a mother is in prison in Burundi. Methodologically, we paid a visit to pregnant and breastfeeding women at Mpimba prison in Burundi. We conducted a survey with them targeting to inquire the context of children feeding practices at Mpimba central prison. Findings show that they are fed with only cassava/maize bread and beans without cooking oil. No porridge, milk, sugar, legumes or meat is said to be in children's diet from the penitentiary administration budget. While they should at list benefit or enjoy their rights equally to their peers outside the jail, the former are in dangerous situation and their quality food is counted on the volunteers and good-doers contribution.

Background: Pregnant women constitute a high-risk group for nutrient deficiency anemia which may be associated with detrimental effects on maternal and infant health. Objectives: This study aimed to assess and compare hematological and biochemical changes across trimesters in pregnant women, considering parameters such as hemoglobin, serum iron, unsaturated iron-binding capacity (UIBC), total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), ferritin, vitamin B12, and folic acid. The research sought to identify mean value differences, correlations, and potential implications for maternal healthcare practices. Methods: A hospital-based prospective observational study was conducted, involving 60 primigravida women with singleton pregnancies. The subjects were assessed during the first, second, and third trimesters. Biochemical parameters were assessed using standard methods, and statistical analysis was performed to identify significance and correlations. Results: The study revealed a significant decline in hemoglobin, serum iron, ferritin, vitamin B12, and folic acid as pregnancy advanced. Hemoglobin levels decreased from 11.40 g/dl (first trimester) to 10.43 g/dl (third trimester). Serum iron exhibited a decline from 109.73 µg/dl (first trimester) to 94.03 µg/dl (third trimester). Serum ferritin decreased from 24.93 ng/ml (first trimester) to 18.21 ng/ml (third trimester). Vitamin B12 levels dropped from 255.92 pg/ml (first trimester) to 92.13 pg/ml (third trimester). Folic acid levels decreased from 13.82 ng/ml (first trimester) to 11.77 ng/ml (third trimester). UIBC and TIBC concentrations increased progressively across trimesters. Statistical evaluations confirmed the significance of these trends. The coefficient of correlation indicated positive relationships between hemoglobin and serum iron, ferritin, folic acid, and vitamin B12. Positive correlation between serum iron and ferritin, vitamin B12, and negative with folic acid. Serum ferritin negatively correlated with vitamin B12 and folic acid. Serum folic acid and vitamin B12 are positively correlated. Conclusion: The findings emphasize the dynamic nature of hematological and biochemical changes during pregnancy. The observed trends have profound implications for maternal healthcare practices, urging targeted interventions, early monitoring, and supportive supplementation. Recognizing these variations contributes to the optimization of health outcomes for both mother and child.

Background/Objectives: This study aimed to explore the influence of hypoxia, inflammation, and erythropoiesis on hepcidin and other iron status parameters in non-anaemic COVID-19 patients admitted to the emergency unit before the introduction of therapeutic interventions. Methods: Ninety-six COVID-19 patients and 47 healthy subjects were recruited. Patients were subdivided into hypoxic or normoxic groups and, after follow-up, into mild and moderate, severe or critical disease severity groups. Iron, unsaturated iron-binding capacity (UIBC), ferritin, C-reactive protein (CRP), and interleukin 6 (IL-6) were measured on automatic analysers. ELISA kits were used for hepcidin and erythropoietin (EPO) determination. We calculated total iron-binding capacity (TIBC) and ratios of hepcidin with parameters of iron metabolism (ferritin/hepcidin, hepcidin/iron), inflammation (hepcidin/CRP, hepcidin/IL-6), and erythropoietic activity (hepcidin/EPO). Results: Hepcidin, ferritin, EPO, CRP, IL-6, ferritin/hepcidin, and hepcidin/iron were increased, while UIBC, TIBC, hepcidin/CRP, and hepcidin/IL-6 were decreased in hypoxic compared to normoxic patients as well as in patients with severe or critical disease compared to those with mild and moderate COVID-19. Regarding predictive parameters of critical COVID-19 occurrence, in multivariable logistic regression analysis, a combination of EPO and ferritin/hepcidin showed very good diagnostic performances and correctly classified 88% of cases, with an AUC of 0.838 (0.749–0.906). Conclusions: The hypoxic signal in our group of patients was not strong enough to overcome the stimulating effect of inflammation on hepcidin expression. EPO and ferritin/hepcidin might help to identify on-admission COVID-19 patients at risk of developing a critical form of the disease.
