Maternal, fetal and perinatal alterations associated with obesity, overweight and gestational diabetes: an observational cohort study (PREOBE)

Abstract: BackgroundMaternal overweight, obesity, and gestational diabetes (GD) have been negatively associated with offspring development. Further knowledge regarding metabolic and nutritional alterations in these mother and their offspring are warranted.MethodsIn an observational cohort study we included 331 pregnant women from Granada, Spain. The mothers were categorized into four groups according to BMI and their GD status; overweight (n:56), obese (n:64), GD (n:79), and healthy normal weight controls (n:132). We as… Show more

“…Self-reported pre-pregnancy BMI was inversely associated with cortisol. Some recent studies report similar findings (Berglund et al 2016;Stirrat et al 2014), and suggest this may underlie the association between higher BMI during pregnancy with macrosomia and prolonged gestation.…”

“…Because of the time span of our study data acquisition (1980-2015) some earlier GD cases might have been undiagnosed, particularly those occurring in 1980s. Even though epidemiological studies have reported a rising trend of GD, these studies must be interpreted with caution: the rising trends of GD may be due to better diagnostics (39)(40)(41)(42). Among women who reported having GD during pregnancy we observed higher percentage of A12C drugs (in majority these were magnesium preparations) and folate/ multivitamin supplement consumption, most likely in pursuit of minimising detrimental effects of GD with health promoting behaviour.…”
