Maternal exercise during pregnancy promotes physical activity in adult offspring

Abstract: Previous rodent studies have shown that maternal voluntary exercise during pregnancy leads to metabolic changes in adult offspring. We set out to test whether maternal voluntary exercise during pregnancy also induces persistent changes in voluntary physical activity in the offspring. Adult C57BL/6J female mice were randomly assigned to be caged with an unlocked (U) or locked (L) running wheel before and during pregnancy. Maternal running behavior was monitored during pregnancy, and body weight, body compositio… Show more

“…Maternal exercise before and during pregnancy is necessary to confer maximal beneficial effects to offspring, and this timing address the likelihood of epigenetic changes represent the underlying mechanism by which maternal exercise improves offspring's metabolic health (Harris et al, 2018). Several data, including from our laboratory, indicates that maternal intervention during pregnancy affects differentially male and female littermates (Marcelino et al, 2016;Noschang et al, 2012;Eclarinal et al, 2016;Zuena et al, 2016). On reason of this, in the present study we analyzed female and male parameters separately.…”

“…Skeletal muscle activity plays a major role in bone health, as evidenced by a reduction in bone density among those with neuromuscular disorders (Khatri et al 2008). Murine studies have further demonstrated that maternal exercise during pregnancy increases the physical activity and insulin sensitivity of the offspring, with similar effects seen when the offspring themselves are exposed to exercise (Carter et al 2012, Acosta et al 2015, Blaize et al 2015, Eclarinal et al 2016. Within the neonatal intensive care nurseries, infant activity may be discouraged over concern the active infant will consume excessive calories, require higher amounts of oxygen or dislodge critical lines and tubes.…”
