“…The large power generated from this sample allowed us to present associations for a wide range of exposures and outcomes. Additionally, exposure and outcome were determined using clinical diagnosis, unlike most previous studies 1314171820212223. We obtained exposure information for the fathers, which was not available in most previous papers.…”

“…With the exception of two studies,1112 the literature examining associations between parental mental illness12131415161718192021222324 or mental illness in adults living with children11 and childhood injuries has only reported risks with common mental disorders such as depression13141617181920212223 and substance use disorders among parents 151924. Many studies evaluated mental illness through self-report rather than clinical diagnosis,13171820212223 and most assessed the effect of maternal mental illness only,12131416171819202223 or did not specify which parent was assessed 24. Only two studies have examined the effect of both maternal and paternal mental illness on risk of injuries in children 1521.…”

“…We aimed to recruit 100 cases of children with CZS and 100 comparison subjects without CZS per setting, which would provide the power to detect an OR of 2.6 in each site for the association between depression and CZS, assuming 95% confidence, 80% power and a prevalence of depression of 15% in unaffected caregivers. [17] Across the two samples (i.e. 200 cases and 200 comparison subjects), the sample size would be adequate to detect an OR of 2.05 for the same association.…”
