Maternal caregiving ameliorates the consequences of prenatal maternal psychological distress on child development

Abstract: Children exposed to prenatal maternal psychological distress are at elevated risk for a range of adverse outcomes; however, it remains poorly understood whether postnatal influences can ameliorate impairments related to prenatal distress. The current study evaluated if sensitivematernal care during the first postnatal year could mitigate child cognitive and emotional impairments associated with prenatal psychological distress. “…This approach will increase our understanding of the effects of maternal prenatal stress and put secondary prevention and intervention programs in place during these precious first 1000 days, which form the foundation for the remaining life course, and beyond. The latter is especially relevant, as impaired child neurodevelopment and associated outcomes due to prenatal stress can be improved by high-quality maternal caregiving [40,41] and improved healthcare [42,43].…”

“…Counseling, psychotherapy, and medication can help treat these disorders (van Ravesteyn, Lambregtse -van den Berg, Hoogendijk, & Kamperman, 2017). Moreover, maternal caregiving can ameliorate the consequences of prenatal maternal psychological distress on child development by altering developmental trajectories and improving child mental outcomes (Grande, Swales, Sandman, Glynn, & Davis, 2022). Similarly, addressing psychosocial and environmental factors, such as changing maternal support or addressing cultural norms, can also mitigate the impact of psychological disorders during pregnancy on the mother and child (Satyanarayana, Lukose, & Srinivasan, 2011).…”

“…The research results of Perdani et al (2021) showed that there was a significant relationship between maternal stimulation and the development of gross motor, fine motor, language, and personal social. Even Grande et al (2021) showed that children who were exposed to prenatal maternal psychological distress did not show adverse outcomes if they received high-quality care. In particular, maternal care moderated the association between prenatal psychological distress and child cognitive functioning and negative emotions.…”
