“…These results are similar to a 2011-2014 surveillance study across 23 US states in which 34% and 18% of women reported emotional and physical childhood abuse, respectively (Merrick et al, 2018). Similarly, a large study conducted in the province that the present study took place (Alberta) found 36% and 17% of adult women reported emotional and physical child abuse (Currie et al, 2020). We also note that the prevalence of physical child abuse in the present study was 4% lower than the Wave II CDC-Kaiser ACE Study with 3500 women in California, suggesting physical child abuse varies across place and time and may not be unusually high in the present sample (Merrick et al, 2017).…”

“…Unfortunately these experiences are common; data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) demonstrates that 59% of the US adult population has experienced at least one adverse childhood event ( Merrick et al, 2018 ). In addition, the accumulation of these adversities has been shown to be more detrimental to health than experiencing one adversity in a dose response fashion ( Currie et al, 2020 ; Felitti, Anda, Nordenberg, & et al, 1998a , 1998b ). Individual adversities as well as the accumulation of CAs, have been associated with negative mental and physical health outcomes in childhood, adolescence and adulthood ( Schilling et al, 2007 ).…”

“…According to previous studies, ACEs are positively correlated with antepartum health risks, and people with ACEs have difficulty controlling their emotions and seek strong compensatory strategies to mitigate negative emotions during pregnancy. This alters the neurobiological circuit and increases the risk of binge drinking during pregnancy [10], and mothers with a high number of ACEs exhibited a high risk for pregnancy diabetes, preeclampsia, low birth weight infants, and short gestation period [5]. Furthermore, chronic stress caused by ACEs elevates risky health behaviors, such as smoking, drinking, and binge eating, which are likely to lead to adverse birth outcomes, such as miscarriage and preterm birth [11].…”
