Materials-Based Occupation versus Imagery-Based Occupation versus Rote Exercise: A Replication and Extension

Abstract: In this study, occupational therapy theory is supported because elderly men and women exercised the lower extremity significantly more when they interacted with a common object than when they engaged in objectless exercise or when they imagined interacting with the object. AbstractHistorically, occupational therapists have embedded exercise within occupation to enhance performance. In a recent study Lang, Nelson, and Bush (1992) compared the effects of materials-based occupation (kicking a balloon), imagery-b… Show more

“…The difference in the number of repetitions between the imagery-based condition and the rote exercise condition was not significant. DeKuiper et al (1993) replicated and extended this study to include the additional variables of distance (height of kicked balloon) and speed (faster kicks). They found that the materials-based condition elicited a greater number of repetitions than the other two conditions.…”

“…Historically, occupational therapists have proposed that 'functional tasks' are those that have meaning and purpose for the client and that the use of these functional tasks promotes health (Steinbeck, 1986;Breines, 1989;DeKuiper et al, 1993;Trombly, 1995). Nelson (1994) defined meaning as an interpretive process that an individual experiences when perceiving something in the environment.…”
