Materiality in Sound Art

Abstract: This article investigates the recent resurgence of kinetic sound art in light of the relationship between art and material. It does this by studying the history of mechanical musical instruments and kinetic art, the role of immateriality in the history of Western art, and the renewed focus on materiality in the arts. Materiality is key to understanding the resurgence of kinetics in sound art. The first part of this article studies the historical narratives of materiality in sound art, while the second part inv… Show more

“…As I noted earlier, that new materialist frameworks devised by Cox (2011), Voegelin (2019) and others are not designed to help us assess the weight of this material corporeality, nor do they equip us with the necessary tools to do so. Where the visual object is the cause of sound, Rose (2013), Pigott (2017) and Flø (2018) are undoubtedly more aligned with the objectives of this article. “…Some artists focus on the associative qualities of a place, such as its social and historical context, its purpose or use (Klein 2009; Spinks 2013). Others describe the process of working with site as entering into a dialogue with its materiality via site-responsive improvisation or analysis of acoustic properties (Hayes 2017; Flø 2018).…”
