Material selection in machine design: The change of cast iron for improving the high-quality Iin woodworking

Abstract: This paper analyzes the possibility to substitute the gray iron, traditionally used for the production of relevant parts in woodworking machines, with ductile iron or vermicular iron. A large experimental campaign to determine the mechanical beavior of ductile and vermicular irons respect to tensile, fatigue, and fracture loads was conducted and the microstructures were also analyzed. Results show that ductile or vermicular cast iron in parts and components of machine tools could provide additional stiffness a… Show more

“…Ductile cast irons (DCI), also known as nodular cast irons or spheroidal graphite irons, are widely used in complex shaped structural parts that need to obey simultaneously to specific requirements such as high mechanical strength, high fatigue resistance, wear resistance and ease of castability [1][2][3][4][5]. A compilation of a few interesting properties of cast irons can be found in [5][6][7].…”

“…The vibration of circular saw blades represents a critical aspect for a safe and precise manufacturing [10][11][12][13], especially in modern cutting tool processing, where uncommon materials [14] or controlling solutions [15] are frequently adopted. It can be investigated by Finite Element Method comparing simulations and measures.…”

“…High-performance machineries for industrial applications, such as high-speed automated assembly lines and machine tools, frequently experience vibrations induced by high dynamic loads, which are possibly detrimental for their operation (Altintas 2012, Liang et al 2013, Fragassa 2017. In practice, due to company production scheduling and resource issues, vibration issues are often detected at late steps of the design workflow, when the machine prototype is assembled and firstly tested.…”
