Following a review of the etymology and modern usage of the term ‘arbitrage’, this article explores the relevance of historical context to possible instances of ancient arbitrage activity. Types of possible ‘arbitrage’ associated with the use of overvalued coinage in regions of Greek influence are considered. Comparison with Roman civilization reveals the relevance of social attitudes and legal institutions to the ability to execute arbitrage trades. Specific attention is given to the possibility of arbitrage across the Roman frontier to India and the impact of debasements during the imperial period. Recognizing that sources prior to early modern times are scant, numismatic, epigraphic and literary evidence that is available to make inferences about ancient arbitrage activity is assessed.

The following study aims to analyze the possible cultural contacts that occurred, mainly, in the portuary zones of the Levantine cities of Tel Dor and Caesarea Marítima during the Roman times, specifically between I BCE and II CE. To this end, some built and natural structures were selected that could reveal these contacts, through their constructive and architectural style, their role in the Roman world, their meanings in the landscape, and the possible physical and symbolic frontiers associated with them. In addition, some objects related to these structures were also selected, which provided more information about them and their contacts. The information was obtained through excavations reports and relevant publications, as well as written sources, specially Flavius Josefo's works, and visits to the archaeological sites. For the debate concerning cultural contacts, the concepts of entanglement and middle ground were used. Finally, for a better organization and understanding of the data, sheets were made with the most relevant information regarding the structures and objects related to them.

The interpretation of figures of deities on the reverse of the coins of Asia Minor cities of the imperial period is usually done in several steps. The deity is generally quickly determined. It is difficult, however, to establish the superior intention behind the depiction. Does the figure refer to a real cult statue of the emitting city, is the image ‘only’ a reference to a local cult or was it chosen to symbolise, for instance, political connections of cities? The essay brings together opinions from 140 years of international numismatic scholarship and thus offers an overview of the changing patterns of interpretation as well as their range in general. In the end, a more conscious approach to the figures of the gods on coins and a more reflective methodological approach are recommended.
