Material Consumption and Crosstalk Characteristics of Different Holographic Storage Concepts

Abstract: Holographic data storage is considered to be one of the most promising technologies for high-capacity data storage. Several holographic concepts have been suggested and investigated in detail by many companies. The concepts differ in the method of superposing object and reference beams inside the holographic medium. At present, the most relevant concepts are the plane wave concept, the collinear concept, and a concept with counterpropagating beams. We compare all three concepts, with regard to their beam overl… Show more

“…Reflectiontype holographic memory has advantages for the collinear setup with the transmission-type geometry in terms of material consumption and crosstalk noise characteristics. 9,10) Recently, a microhologram as a reflection-type hologram was investigated for volumetric bit-oriented memory. 11,12) The storage capacity of the reflection-type holographic memory system with speckle shift multiplexing is derived numerically using a holographic memory simulator on the basis of scalar diffraction theory.…”

“…The investigation of the optic concept and search for suitable materials are the foci of the current research in the field of holographic data storage. 1) Nevertheless, a well-designed data detection method, that is, the data processing from creating, sending, receiving, and identifying stored data, is one of the key components for a suitable page-oriented holographic data storage system (HDSS). 4) The main objective of using this data detection method is to increase the data capacity while simultaneously keeping robust and high-speed data processing.…”
