Abstract: These results highlight the importance of assessing perceived discrepancies in mate value (notably, regarding the replaceability of self and partner with another long-term mate) and perceived mate retention behaviors of self, relative to partner, between men and women in long-term relationships.

“…Because cosmetic surgery artificially enhances a woman’s perceived attractiveness, women who undergo cosmetic procedures may thereby indirectly derogate intrasexual competitors. Women’s enhanced appearance, moreover, may inflate mate value discrepancy within a romantic dyad, consequently resulting in a decrease in their partner’s self-esteem—consistent with the conceptualization of Cost-Inflicting mate retention ( Sela et al, 2016 ). It was therefore expected that consideration of cosmetic surgery will be positively associated with both Benefit-Provisioning mate retention (Hypothesis 1) and Cost-Inflicting (Hypothesis 2) mate retention for women, but not men.…”

“…Participants self-reported their mate value as well as their partner's mate value (as both self and partner-mate values predict the use of mate retention behaviours, see Miner et al 2009). Consistent with Sela et al (2016), we calculated mate value discrepancy by computing the difference between the participants' self and partner mate values.…”

“…From this perspective, similarity may be a key factor that influences the degree of love. In addition, researchers found that differences in excellence levels, such as those relating to ability and achievement, between partners would also be an important factor influencing romantic relationships ( Conroy-Beam et al, 2016 ).…”
