Matching barriers and facilitators to implementation strategies: recommendations for community settings

Laura E. Balis,
Bailey Houghtaling

Abstract: Background Implementation science aims to improve the integration of evidence-based interventions in real-world settings. While its methods and models could potentially apply to any field with evidence-based interventions, most research thus far has originated in clinical settings. Community settings often have fewer resources, missions beyond health, and a lack of support and expertise to implement evidence-based interventions when compared to many clinical settings. Thus, selecting and tailor… Show more

“…Most of the facility level barriers identi ed were consistent with those reported in other studies that evaluated health related interventions or assessed facility readiness to implement AHD rapid diagnostic and screening tests [34,36,37], hence needed blended strategies that target multiple points in the screening process. For instance, inconsistencies in AHD screening as a result to inadequate knowledge and non-adherence to guidelines require strategies such as on-going trainings, combined with team building, and collaborative learning approaches that maximizes the impact [38], [39] .…”

“…Implementation strategies are theorized to work well when carefully matched to targeted determinants, including barriers and facilitators, and when factors that influence strategy effectiveness—such as preconditions and moderators—are prospectively identified and addressed. Yet, selecting a strategy appropriate for a specific determinant within a given setting remains a vexing problem in implementation practice and research ( Balis & Houghtaling, 2023 ). The field is lacking in theory and empirical evidence that informs which implementation strategies are capable of addressing specific barriers and facilitators ( Wang et al, 2023 ).…”

“…The ability to optimize implementation across contextual and temporal variations in determinants will require a more rapid and pragmatic approach to strategy tailoring. Balis and Houghtaling (2023) illustrate the challenge, by describing the difficulties experienced in their efforts to tailor strategies to implement nutrition and physical activity policy, systems, and environmental change interventions [ 12 ].…”
