Matched comparison of next- and early-generation balloon-expandable transcatheter heart valve implantations in failed surgical aortic bioprostheses

Abstract: Transcatheter aortic VinV with the balloon-expandable SAPIEN XT or SAPIEN 3 was similarly safe and effective. However, residual stenosis remains a concern, particularly in smaller bioprostheses and with increasing implantation depth.

“…A second analysis, comparing 514 SAPIEN XT and SAPIEN 3 patients, was able to identify a trend towards lower 30-day mortality in SAPIEN 3 cases (0.6% vs 3.5%) 16. These may reflect increased experience with balloon-expandable devices.…”

“…While several different transcatheter heart valves are currently available in the market, 22,23 the most widely used are the balloon-expandable SAPIEN 3 (Edwards Lifesciences) and the self-expandable Evolut (Medtronic Inc., Minneapolis, MN, USA). Each of these devices have specific advantages and disadvantages, and to date, no head-to-head prospective comparison in ViV has ever been performed.…”
