Objective: To compare the physical and technical skill match activity profiles of drafted and non-drafted under 18 (U18) Australian football (AF) players.Design: Cross-sectional observational.Methods: In-game physical and skill variables were assessed for U18 AF players participating within the 2013 and 2014 National U18 AFL Championships. Players originated from one State Academy (n = 55). Ten games were analysed; resulting in 183 observations. Players were sub-divided into two groups; drafted / non-drafted. Microtechnology and a commercial statistical provider allowed the quantification of total distance (m), relative distance (m.min -1 ), high speed running distance (> 15km.hr -1 ), high speed running expressed as a percentage of total distance (% total), total disposals, marks, contested possessions, uncontested possessions, inside 50's and rebound 50's (n = 10). The effect size (d) of draft outcome on these criterion variables was calculated, with generalised estimating equations (GEE's) used to model which of these criterion variables was associated with draft outcome.

Methods:Using the centiMax rating of perceived exertion (RPE) scale, 26 professional AFL players provided ratings for match exertion (RPE-M), along with differential ratings for breathlessness (RPE-B), leg exertion (RPE-L), and technical demand (RPE-T) following 129 matches (5.0 ± 1.6 matches per player). Global positioning satellite (GPS) and accelerometer measures were also collected. Data were analysed using magnitude-based inferences.Results: RPE scores were 93.0  8.2 AU (RPE-M), 89.0  11.0 AU (RPE-B), 91.5  9.8 AU (RPE-L), and 87.0  10.0 AU (RPE-T). There was a most likely small difference between RPE-L and RPE-T (5.5%; 90% confidence limits 1.9%), a likely small difference between RPE-L and RPE-B (3.5%;1.5%) and a possibly small difference between RPE-B and RPE-T (1.9%; 1.9%). Within-player correlations between RPE and GPS measures were small for RPE-M (r=0.14-0.28), unclear to small for RPE-B (r=0.06-0.24) and unclear to moderate for RPE-L (r=0.06-0.37). Differential RPE's combined to explain 76% of the variance in RPE-M. For all RPE scores, within-player variability was moderate-high (typical error: 7.9-12.4%), and the thresholds for a likely between-match change were 8.8-13.7%. Conclusions:As differential RPE's represent distinct sensory inputs, the collection of these scores facilitate the interpretation of internal match loads and therefore represent a valuable addition to match data collection procedures. Moderate to high within-player variability should be considered when interpreting between-match changes in all RPE scores.

Gold Standard or Fool’s Gold? The Efficacy of Displacement Variables as Indicators of Energy Expenditure in Team Sports

Over recent decades, the use of player tracking technology to monitor physical work output has become established practice in many team sports. Early tracking systems were manual in nature, relying on subjective assessments and arbitrary classifications of movement intensity. Poor spatial and temporal resolution meant that only gross displacement measures could be used to infer energy demands. However, the advent and evolution of automated systems, with higher sampling rates and improved accuracy, have enabled data collection to occur on a mass scale, and served as a catalyst for extensive research into the demands of team sport activity, including comparisons between different groups of athletes, and the effects of various interventions on performance. The inherent assumption with this research is that, based on steady-state models where energy cost is independent of speed, total distance and average speed are indicative of the amount and rate of work done, respectively. This assumption could be justified if the activity was performed at a constant speed in a straight line. However, team sport movement involves continual changes in both speed and direction, both of which increase energy cost. Accordingly, new models have emerged that incorporate both speed and acceleration to determine metabolic power. This provides a more complete measure of energy expenditure in intermittent activity, and is potentially more suitable than displacement variables for research into the demands of team sports.
