Masticatory performance with different types of rehabilitation of the edentulous mandible

Abstract: Aim: To compare the masticatory performance associated with different rehabilitation strategies for patients with edentulous mandibles. Methods: one portion of the test food "Optocal" was provided to groups: Natural Dentition (n = 15), Mandibular Fixed Implant-Supported Prosthesis with Maxillary Fixed Prosthesis (n = 8), Mandibular Fixed Implant-Supported Prosthesis with Maxillary Removable Prosthesis (n = 14), Mandibular Implant-Retained Overdenture with Maxillary Removable Prosthesis (n = 16), and Complete D… Show more

“…Clinical observations and research indicate that mere fabricating dental prosthesis to manage or rehabilitate edentulism does not necessarily guarantee automatic improvement of patient's sensory and motor function, or successful adaptation to the new sensorimotor condition . Lack of simple and clinically viable methods for subjective evaluation or use of non‐standardised methods across different studies makes it difficult to compare and quantify the magnitude of the problem . Further, studies have shown discrepancies in chewing efficiency and impaired sensorimotor control associated with people rehabilitated with dental prosthesis .…”

“…[36][37][38][39] Lack of simple and clinically viable methods for subjective evaluation or use of non-standardised methods across different studies makes it difficult to compare and quantify the magnitude of the problem. 35,40 Further, studies have shown discrepancies in chewing efficiency and impaired sensorimotor control associated with people rehabilitated with dental prosthesis. [36][37][38][39]41 It has been suggested that edentulous patients despite wearing well-made dental prosthesis have difficulties in chewing hard and tough food.…”

“…A literatura mostra que indivíduos com dentição natural saudável apresentam índices máximos no desempenho mastigatório e os indivíduos com PTR bimaxilar apresentam índices mínimos. Entretanto, estes valores podem variar dependendo do estado da dentição e do tratamento reabilitador realizado (Neves, 2015). Nesta pesquisa, houve maior número de ciclos mastigatórios em pacientes com menor número de elementos dentários presentes, semelhante ao estudo de Campos (2019).…”

“…Despite the studies included in this review did not report the location of missing teeth, several studies assessing the incidence of tooth loss have demonstrated that the posterior occluding units are the most affected and the front teeth the least affected (Montandon et al, 2012; Minja et al, 2016); being premolars less affected than molars (Silva-Junior et al, 2017), and this may interfere in the prediction of MD. Thus, future studies should include the location of missing teeth in dental records, considering that the presence of three to four premolars can still provide good mastication function, as well as the presence of removable full or partial dentures (Zhang et al, 2019), fixed dentures and implants (Prithviraj et al, 2014; Neves et al, 2015).…”
