Mass spectrometric study of the vaporization and thermodynamic properties of components in the BaO-TiO2-SiO2 system

Abstract: The activities of silicon dioxide and barium oxide in the BaO-TiO 2 -SiO 2 system containing from 10 to 50 mol % SiO 2 at a mole fraction ratio BaO : TiO 2 = 1 and at a constant SiO 2 mole fraction of 0.5 are determined using high-temperature differential mass spectrometry. It is shown that the positive deviation of the SiO 2 activity and the negative deviation of the BaO activity from ideal behavior are observed at high SiO 2 contents.

“…Stolyarova and Lopatin [56] measured the activity of SiO 2 in the BaO-TiO 2 -SiO 2 system at 1900 K using hightemperature differential mass spectrometry. The activity of SiO 2 in the TiO 2 -SiO 2 system at 1900 K for TiO 2 -SiO 2 1:1 is only available.…”

“…In [63], calculated data on the activity of SiO 2 in the TiO 2 -SiO 2 system at 1527, 1627, and 2527 • C are also presented. Unfortunately, there is only one experimental point at 1627 • C for the TiO 2 : SiO 2 molar ratio of 1 : 1 [65]. A strong positive deviation from ideality and the inflection point of the liquidus arises due to the presence of liquid phase separation (Fig.…”

“…Thermodynamic functions of the systems under consideration such as activities and chemical potentials of components as well as the Gibbs energies showed various signs of the deviations from the ideal behaviour. The features of thermodynamic description of the melts in the following systems studied recently may be found also as mentioned above for the Na 2 O-B 2 O 3 -SiO 2 [22,23] [8,33,36] systems. The negative deviations from the ideal behaviour were observed in the melts of all these systems except CaO-TiO 2 -SiO 2 and BaO-TiO 2 -SiO 2 glasses and melts where the existence of the wide immiscibility regions may be expected as in the TiO 2 -SiO 2 system according to [47].…”

“…[8,33,36] Because of this reason it was traditional approach when all thermodynamic functions obtained in oxide systems by the method mentioned were considered -from the point of view of the necessary stability conditions as regards the continuous nature its change of state; -as the verification of the mutual agreement of the data using the Gibbs-Duhem equation;…”
