Mass media and heterogeneous bounds of confidence in continuous opinion dynamics

Abstract: This work focus on the effects of an external mass media on continuous opinion dynamics with heterogeneous bounds of confidence. We modified the original Deffuant et al. and Hegselmann and Krause models to incorporate both, an external mass media and a heterogeneous distribution of confidence levels. We analysed two cases, one where only two bounds of confidence are taken into account, and other were each individual of the system has her/his own characteristic level of confidence. We found that, in the absence… Show more

“…In this model, one of the Mass Media reflects the dominant cultural state of a given population and influence the other one. The study of social interactions and the presence of a Mass Media was also explored in the context of other models, as for instance, the Deffuant's model ( [17]), the voter model ( [18]), and the Sznadj's model ( [19], [20]).…”

“…Various types of opinion dynamics models in the social¯eld 3,4 have been proposed on how individualopinion is changed by the interaction with others under the in°uence of the news media and other information. [5][6][7][8][9][10] Many of these approaches are the so-called agent-based model whose focuses are to discuss the microscopic feature of the opinion of individual people. [11][12][13] The opinion is in general the subjective cognition or the view of value to a certain matter, whereas the concern or the interest in the matter is clearly di®erent from the opinion.…”
