Mass calibration of the CODEX cluster sample using SPIDERS spectroscopy – II. The X-ray luminosity–mass relation

Abstract: We perform the calibration of the X-ray luminosity-mass scaling relation on a sample of 344 CODEX clusters with z < 0.66 using the dynamics of their member galaxies. Spectroscopic follow-up measurements have been obtained from the SPIDERS survey, leading to a sample of 6,658 red member galaxies. We use the Jeans equation to calculate halo masses, assuming an NFW mass profile and analyzing a broad range of anisotropy profiles. With a scaling relation of the form L X ∝ A X M BX 200c E(z) 2 (1 + z) γX , we find b… Show more

“…Our relation is in excellent agreement with a previous (Capasso et al 2020) study of dynamical masses using a subset of our sample. We also fit a scaling relation as log σ ∝A + B log λ Legacy (equation 3) using the BCES method.…”

“…Compared to simulations, our estimate falls between the higher prediction of Saro et al (2013) and the lower prediction of Munari et al (2013). The low intrinsic scatter is also comparable to other cluster mass proxies such as X-ray luminosity, X-ray temperature, optical richness, and SZ thermal energy (Capasso et al 2019(Capasso et al , 2020Mulroy et al 2019;Bleem et al 2020;Kiiveri et al 2021).…”

“…Data Run 16 contains 2740 clusters with close to 42 000 galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts. There are a number of parameters measured for each cluster, including the virial mass M 200 estimated from its velocity dispersion, and both M 200 and the X-ray luminosity L X are iteratively calibrated using an M 200 − L X scaling relation (Capasso et al 2020). Also provided within SPIDERS are three potential definitions of the centre of a cluster, each of which has been used for an independent measurement ofˆ .…”
