Mass Biosynthesis of Coumestrol Derivatives and Their Isomers via Soybean Adventitious Root Cultivation in Bioreactors

Abstract: Coumestrol (CMS) derivatives are unique compounds, which function as phytoalexins; they are derived from soybean roots, following abiotic and biotic stresses. As a phytoalexin, CMS forms a defense system that enables plants to maintain their viability. However, it is still challenging to achieve the mass production of phytoalexins, which exhibit pharmacological values, via plant breeding. Here, the synthesis of CMS derivatives from the seedling, plant, and adventitious root (AR) of Glycine max were investigate… Show more

“…For instance, the accumulation of coumestrol and the expression of genes involved in soybean coumestrol biosynthesis increase during leaf development, senescence, pathogen infection, nodulation, various stress treatments, and hormone treatments such as salicylic acid (SA), methyl jasmonate (MeJA), and ethylene (ET). This suggests that coumestans, including coumestrol, play crucial roles in plant development and stress defense ( Boue et al., 2000 ; Lee et al., 2012 ; Tripathi et al., 2016 ; Ha et al., 2019 ; Mun et al., 2021 ; Ohta et al., 2021 ; Lee et al., 2022 ). Other coumestan compounds, like wedelolactone and psoralidin, exhibit similar functions.…”

“…Some of the plant-based production limitations can be solved by plant-tissue culturing. Coumestrol biosynthesis was obtained through adventitious soybean root cultivation, but it is still an unsustainable and cost-ineffective solution (Lee et al, 2022). Another production strategy is chemical synthesis, where the metabolite can be solely synthesized using chemical approaches.…”
