“…Pb mean values obtained for the considered stations are comparable with Pb concentrations in clean coastal sediments (lower than 25 µg g −1 (UNEP 1985;Bryan and Langston 1992)) and slightly higher than average Pb levels in Indian River sediments (about 14 µg g −1 (Decov et al 1999). As evidenced in Table 3, an overall elevated concentration of Pb was observed in deeper layers of each core samples reaching its maximum value of 34.1 µg/g at S 2 in 10-15 cm in midlittoral zone which might be ascribed to river borne sources (Forstner 1983) as well as intensive human activities (Alagarsamy 2006) including agriculture in the drainage basin (Monbet 2006), auto-exhaust emission together with atmospheric deposition (Adriano 1986). In addition, a substantial contribution from the factories located in the upstream of the Hugli river dealing with lead producing lead ingots and lead alloys plays a vital role as mentioned by Sarkar et al (2007).…”

“…French (Cu, Pb, Ni, Zn;Chiffoleau et al, 1999;Monbet, 2006) and English (Co, Cu, Pb, Ni, Zn;Laslett, 1995;Martino et al, 2002) estuaries and marine adjacent areas as well as those of the southwestern Spanish coast (Cd, Cu, Zn;van Geen et al, 1991;Elbaz-Poulichet et al, 2001) show higher levels of the investigated metal than the waters of the Sound.…”

“…Monitoring programs of metals in estuaries have been extensively studied elsewhere (Páez-Osuna et al 2003;Amiard et al 2005;Monbet 2006;Bowie et al 2006). However, there are few studies related to metal in waters of the Gulf of California.…”
