Maslinic acid improves quality of life by alleviating joint knee pain in the elderly: results from a community-based pilot study

Abstract: Chronic knee joint pain is common in the elderly and associated with poor quality of life. This study, an open-label clinical trial, aimed to examine how the intake on a daily basis of maslinic acid-containing product (30 mg maslinic acid) on 29 elderly residents (mean 70.7 ± 10.1 years) of Nakajima Island, Ehime, Japan. Study participants consumed 10 g jelly containing maslinic acid daily for 16 weeks and at 0 (baseline), 4, 8, 12 and 16 weeks, assessed for health-related quality of life (Short Form-8) and kn… Show more

“…We prepared the jelly containing the MA derived from olive fruit extract (Nippon Flour Mills CO., Ltd., Tokyo, Japan). (17) Participants were instructed to consume daily either 20 g of the MA jelly (60 mg of MA) or the placebo jelly (without MA) preferably after breakfast for 12 weeks. Both experimental supplements included an equivalent amount of water, gelling agent, emulsifying agents, pH adjusters, grapefruit seed extract, sweetener, and aroma chemicals.…”

“…Based on the results of this analysis on muscle function measurements, positive outcomes were reported in all groups, underlining the significance of a non-invasive (chemical or natural treatment) approach, while there was significant interaction (time × group) (p = 0.03) in the "isokinetic extension peak torque" domain for severe OA (Kellgren and Lawrence (K-L) grade ≥ 3) [128]. Moreover, in the setting of an open-label clinical trial, daily consumption of a MA-containing product (30 mg MA) for a period of 16 weeks improved the physical quality of life, level of bodily pain, and physical component, but not mental quality of life in a total of 29 elderly (mean age: 70.7 ± 10.1 years) participants [129].…”

“…Such is the case of triterpenic acids (TA), a group of pentacyclic compounds of increasing nutritional interest. Numerous beneficial health properties have been attributed to TA, such as anti‐inflammatory, antitumoral, antihyperglycemic, hepatoprotective, cardioprotective and antimicrobial effects . Oleanolic (OA) and maslinic acids (MA) are the main TA found in olive oils and olive pomace oils .…”

[4][5][6][7] Oleanolic (OA) and maslinic acids (MA) are the main TA found in olive oils and olive pomace oils. 2 While minor amounts of these compounds are detected in olive oils, significant concentrations occur in olive pomace oils, and especially in crude oils, in which they are mostly present as solid particles in suspension because of their very low solubility.…”
