Masking white spots of enamel in caries lesions with a non-invasive infiltration technique in vitro

Abstract: ABSTRACT. We investigated the treatment effect of non-invasive infiltration on early caries caused by different degrees of enamel demineralization. Forty specimens of early enamel caries were prepared and divided into low and high demineralization groups. After treatment with non-invasive infiltration, the specimens were placed under cariogenic conditions. Color measurements were determined using a spectrophotometer 4 times to obtain chromatism values (ΔE1-ΔE4), including before and after production of artific… Show more

“…Also, 8 groups were assigned for double infiltrant application; 3 minutes for the first step and further 1 minute for the second step according to manufacturer's instructions. This was suggested by two studies (20,29) which noticed decreased lesion pore volume after double resin infiltrant application. Also, the resin infiltrant was recommended to be applied twice by Robinson et al (35) because of the shrinkage of the material following the first application resulting in the generation of space that can then be occluded by a second application.…”

“…Two studies by Kim et al (28) and Ou et al (29) examined the association between the depth of WSLs and the effect of resin infiltration, but no evidence was given regarding the number of etching and infiltrant applications needed for each depth.…”

“…Colorimetric distance is defined as the value that represents the distance between the positions of two colours within the colour space. So far the most frequently colour space used to calculate the colour of natural teeth and restorative materials has been the standard established by the Comission Internationale de l'Éclairage in 1976 (CIE L*a*b*) 3,4 .…”
