Abstract:The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) lists 1571 as the year of the first recorded use of the English word ‘masculinity’; the Ancient Greek α˘νδρϵι´α¯ (andreia), usually translated as ‘courage’, was also used to refer to manliness.
