Martensitic transformation induced by single shot peening in a metastable austenitic stainless steel 301LN: Experiments and numerical simulation

Abstract: During conventional shot peening on metastable austenitic steels, martensitic transformation occurs in addition to plastic straining. In this work, the impact of a single spherical steel shot on a AISI 301LN steel was studied. The volume fraction of martensite, residual stresses in both phases were determined in the vicinity of the dent as a function of the shot velocity and diameter. An elasto-plastic two phase model that includes martensitic phase transformation was adapted to model mechanical and microstruc… Show more

“…Figure 1 presents the simulated behavior curves. It can be seen that the yield stress and the martensitic volume fraction agrees well with the experimental results from the literature [20]. The martensitic transformation starts at the strain of about 12% and increases to 0.6 of the volume fraction at the strain of 0.25.…”

“…The constitutive model has been implemented in the finite element software ABAQUS by developing a user subroutine. Because we are going to compare the simulated results of the shot peening with that in the literature [20], the material mechanical behaviors from tensile tests in Reference [20] are taken as the targets of the optimizations.…”

“…evolution of the volume fraction of martensite f versus the control parameters, is defined within a thermodynamical time-independent framework. Guiheux et al (2017) completed the transformation kinetics proposed by Kubler et al (2011), where the transformation kinetics involves Patel-Cohen (Patel and Cohen, 1953) and Olson-Cohen (Olson and Cohen, 1982)…”
