Happiness research in economics takes reported subjective well-being as a proxy measure for utility and has already provided many interesting insights about human well-being and its determinants. We argue that future research on happiness in economics has a lot of potential, but that it needs to be guided more by theory. We propose two ways to test theories of happiness, and illustrate them with two applications. First, reported subjective well-being can contribute towards a new understanding of utility in economics. Here, we study the introduction of income aspirations in individuals' utility functions in order to improve our understanding of how income affects individual well-being. Second, happiness data offers a new possibility of discriminating between different models of behavior. This is studied for theories of marriage, which crucially depend on auxiliary assumptions as to what contributes to well-being in marriage. Both applications are empirically tested with panel data for Germany.JEL classification: D13, D60, D63, I31, J12

ÖzErgenlik döneminden yetişkinliğe geçişte bireylerin, çeşitli rol dönüşümlerini gerçekleştirmeleri beklenmektedir. Her iki cinsiyet için de yetişkin rollerinin içeriği ve zamanlaması, dünyadaki sosyal, ekonomik ve kültürel değişimlerin bir parçası olarak önemli ölçüde değişmeye başlamıştır. Kadınlar daha fazla oranda iş gücüne katılım gösterirken; erkekler de daha fazla oranda aile yaşamı ve çocuk bakımında yer almaya başlamışlardır. Artık çoklu rollere sahip olma her iki cinsiyetin de roller arasında çatışma yaşamasına neden olmakla birlikte; günümüz genç yetişkinleri için halen evli ve çocuk sahibi olma daha iyi psikolojik sağlıkla ilişkili gözükmektedir. Ancak çatışmalı ve mutsuz evliliklerde, evliliğin sağladığı olumlu etkiler ortadan kalkmakta; tam tersine bireyin sağlığı üzerin-de bozucu bir rol oynamaktadır. Rollerin içeriğinin yanı sıra zamanlaması da bireylerin psikolojik sağlığı ile ilişkilidir. Rolleri erken üstlenen bireyler, psikolojik sağlık, eş ve aile ilişkileri açısından daha dezavantajlı bir konuma sahipken; rolleri zamanında ve geç üstlenen bireyler, daha iyi psikolojik sağlık ve yaşam koşullarına sahiplerdir. Bu gözden geçirme yazısının amacı, günümüz toplumlarında yetişkin rollerini üstlenme ve yetişkin rollerindeki zamanlamanın, bireyin psikolojik sağlığına etkilerinin değerlendirilmesidir.Anahtar sözcükler: Yetişkin,evlilik,sağlığın sosyal belirleyicileri,ruh sağlığı. AbstractIn the transition from adolescence to adulthood, individuals are expected to undertake a variety of role transitions. The adult roles and their contents have begun to change for both genders as a part of social, economic and cultural changes in the world. As women began to join to the work force more, men's involvement in family life and childcare increased. Although having multiple roles causes conflict between the roles for both genders nowadays, being married and having children still seem to be related to better psychological health for today's early adults. However, these positive effects of marriage disappear in conflicting and unhappy marriages; and these marriages, on the contrary, damage the health of individuals. In addition to the content, the timing of the roles is also related to the psychological health of individuals. As adults who undertake the roles early have a disadvantaged position in terms of psychological health, marital and family relations, on the other hand, adults who undertake these roles on-time and lately have better psychological health and life conditions. The aim of this review is to assess the effects of undertaking adult roles and its timing on individuals' psychological health in today's societies.

La satisfaction dans la vie et les notions apparentées (exemple : bien-être, qualité de vie, bonheur) connaissent à l’heure actuelle un engouement scientifique sans précédent. S’appuyant particulièrement sur la consolidation du courant associé à la psychologie positive, cet intérêt « renouvelé » appelle une exploration des tenants et des aboutissants de la satisfaction dans la vie afin de mieux en cerner les aspects conceptuels et relationnels. Le présent texte vise à mettre en lumière les connaissances émanant de la psychologie sur le sujet par une reconstruction historique des moments importants ayant structuré son évolution. À partir d’une analyse séquentielle, explorant le contexte général, théorique et empirique, cet article esquisse une synthèse des réflexions entourant la notion de satisfaction dans la vie permettant de dresser un portait global des chemins visités et de ceux à parcourir.In the recent past, topics like life satisfaction and other related concepts (well-being, quality of life, happiness) have been the object of unprecedented scientific interest. Based in part on the interest for positive psychology, this renewed interest calls for a structured reflection on the conceptual and relational dimensions of life satisfaction. This paper sheds some light on the actual psychological knowledge about life satisfaction in presenting the main phases of its evolution. Through a sequential analysis which explores the general, theoretical and empirical contexts, the paper presents a synthesis of the literature on the concept of life satisfaction. This synthesis offers a portrait of what was done and what needs to be done
