Marlin Failure Analysis and Redesign; Part 3, VIT Completion with Real-Time Monitoring

Abstract: Following the failure of the initial well in the Marlin field1 the preferred solution for completing the remaining wells was to control wellbore temperature via vacuum insulated tubing (VIT)2. Implementation of VIT required a number of computational and experimental innovations, including:Provision for insulating the tubing couplings, the source of up to 90% of VIT heat loss;Detailed flow loop temperature profiles using both axial probes and radial probes traversing the annulus outside the VIT. These profiles … Show more

“…6,7,8 Of all the applications for downhole DTS, the determination of oil and water influx rates from each producing interval is probably the most valuable to operating oil companies. Figure 1 illustrates how DTS measurements can be used to determine which fluids enter the wellbore and where.…”

“…DTS measurements are used to monitor the temperature of the trapped fluid volume to help avoid this potentially catastrophic event. 8,13 Often, some form of artificial lift might be necessary during the life of a well. Several methods of artificial lift are available, the selection of which depends on many factors.…”

“…It is the main application to mitigation of APB (Gosch et al, 2004;Azzola et al, 2004b). Shell has been used vacuum insulation systems at Gulf of Mexico to prevent APB and gets oil production maximization due the lower viscosity of the formation fluid.…”
