Marker-assisted selection and gene pyramiding for resistance to bacterial leaf blight disease of rice (Oryza sativaL.)

Abstract: Marker-assisted selection and gene pyramiding are very important breeding strategies for conferring broad spectrum and durable resistance against diseases causing yield loss in rice. One such disease causing major set backs in rice production is bacterial leaf blight (BLB) caused by the pathogen Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae. Molecular markers are very essential in both markerassisted selection and pyramiding of genes, hence, many molecular marker techniques have already been developed. Presently, the most com… Show more

“…The result confirms the successful pyramiding of the target genes into the BC 2 F 1 populations using marker-assisted foreground selection. Foreground markers are closely associated or linked to the gene of interest on the same chromosome and as such are carried from one generation to another [22,23].…”

“…However, this disease occurs due to the interaction of a favorable environment, a susceptible genotype and a virulent pathogen. Hence, the utilization of resistant cultivar is a favorable way to reduce the use of destructive pesticides [15,16]. Molecular markers have been intensively used to pyramid beneficial and multiple alleles to develop new rice blast resistant varieties [17][18][19].…”
