“…Recently through application of marker-assisted backcrossing, many R genes for blast and bacterial blight have been successfully introgressed into elite inbred lines of rice to improve the disease resistance. Some new inbred varieties that combine excellent grain quality with resistance to diseases and input use efficiency have been popularized in Southeast Asia (Joseph et al 2004 ; Luo et al 2014 ; Ratna Madhavi et al 2016 ; Tanweer et al 2015 ; Xiao et al 2016 ).…”

“…Eleven rice lines designated as RPNF01 through RPNF11 were used in this study. These lines were derived from a common elite variety BPT5204 (Samba Mahsuri- RPNF11- susceptible to BB, BL and GM) through systematic introgression of any of the three BB resistance genes Xa21, xa13, xa5; two of the BL resistance genes Pi2 , Pi54 and four of the GM resistance genes , Gm1, gm3, Gm4 and Gm8 in different combinations through marker-assisted backcross breeding (MABB) (Sama et al 2014 ; Madhavi et al 2016 ; Kumar et al 2017 ) as detailed in Table 1 . Foreground selection for introgression of these genes was accomplished using reported linked or gene based markers (Additional file 3 : Table S3).…”

“…oryzae) genes (Xa21, xa13, and xa5) [132]. Two major blast disease (Magnaporthe oryzae) resistance genes (Pi-2 and Pi-54) and a BB gene (Xa38) were further stacked into 'ISM' [133,134]. 'Pusa Basmati 1' pyramided with two (Pi2+Pi5) and three (Pi54+Pi1+Pita) blast genes [135] and improved version of 'Pusa Basmati 1121' and 'Pusa Basmati 6' carrying blast (Pi2 and Pi54) and BB resistance genes (xa13 and Xa21) are among others [136].…”
